Annual Lantern Festival
The annual Lantern Festival is an extraordinary sight to behold, one that draws hundreds of people to New Taipei City each year. It's a Taiwanese tradition, which also attracts tourists from around the world.
This year a giant pig is set on its maiden flight, to commemorate the Chinese Year of the Pig which started this month. Earlier in the day people queued to write messages on the giant pink lantern. Everybody here in Pingxi township is releasing paper lanterns in the hope of an auspicious year.
The Lantern Festival ends the 15-day celebration of Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, and is celebrated on the night of the first full moon of the Lunar New Year.
