Authorities throughout the country are looking for a missing 22-year-old woman—Gabby Petito who is missing after embarking on a cross-country vacation with her fiancé in a converted van.
Gabrielle, or Gabby, Petito, and Brian Laundrie, 23, chronicled the journey on Instagram and YouTube.
Petito and Laundrie were childhood sweethearts on Long Island before relocating to North Port, Florida, to live with his parents in 2019.
The Petito family has subsequently retrieved the vehicle in which the two were traveling. Laundrie was present at the residence, having returned on Sept. 1, but he refused to talk with police.
Both families are going through “an extraordinarily terrible period.” Laundrie is wanted for questioning about the unexplained disappearance of the girl.
“On behalf of the Laundrie family it is our hope that the search for Miss Petito is successful and that Miss Petito is re-united with her family,” Laundrie’s parents stated and “will have no further comment”.
Police called the incident a “mental health crisis,” but no charges were filed against either of them.
The incident occurred at a convenience store at 39 East 100 North in Moab on Aug. 12 at 4:30 p.m., according to the police report, in which “the man and female had involved in some type of fight.” The event was investigated by police as disorderly behavior.
“Seeing a male, later identified as Brian Laundrie, and a female, later identified as Gabrielle Petito, arguing over a phone,” a witness told police. “when Brian got into the van, he saw what appeared to him as Gabrielle hitting Brian in the arm and then climbing through the driver’s window as if Brian had locked her out and she was trying to find a way in,” the witness continued.
North Port officers are cooperating with Suffolk County cops on the missing girl investigation and have around a dozen investigators looking for “anything that could offer us information.”
