The former lawyer to President Donald Trump, Michael Cohen, is to begin his three-year sentence today for tax evasion, bank fraud, and lying to Congress. He will be serving his time at the federal prison in Otisville, New York.
Cohen, 53, is to report by 2 p.m. on May 6, to the Federal Correctional Institution located in the countryside, just 70 miles northwest of New York City.
The minimum security prison is known as a soft-prison haven for white-collar criminals. Forbes once ranked it as one of “America’s 10 Cushiest Prisons.”
Cohen’s legal team has tried for weeks to get his sentence delayed and reduced. He initially was to start serving on March 6. He was granted a two-month delay to recover from surgery and get his affairs in order.
Cohen spent his last free weekend at his Manhattan apartment, and out with his son, getting coffee, a haircut, and doing some shopping, FoxNews reported.
Federal prosecutors have said Trump directed Cohen to arrange the payments to buy the silence of porn actress Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal in the run-up to the 2016 election. Trump denies that he had trysts with either woman.
Cohen pleaded guilty to lying to Congress about a Trump Tower project in Moscow, as well as to charges of tax evasion and bank fraud.
Cohen’s fellow famous inmates include Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino, who will finish his eight-month tax fraud sentence in September and Billy McFarland, serving a six-year sentence for defrauding $27.4 million from investors by marketing and selling tickets to a Fyre Festival.
