Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) on Wednesday night, March 18, offered rare praise of President Donald Trump’s response to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) virus, saying “this is incredible and the right response in this critical time.”

Omar quoted Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) as saying, “Unprecedented times require unprecedented leadership,” adding, “We are seeing that in our country right now.”

“Finally, we should never let politics get in the way of good policy,” she concluded. “This is a great start and hope others will be part of a united front to push for good policies that will help us work through the economic anxiety the country is feeling right now.”

Several Democrats, who are staunch critics of President Trump such as Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) andGov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.), also gave credit to the president’s handling of the crisis. Omar’s comments came after the Trump administration took strong measures in an effort to address the spread of the CCP Virus that infected more than 8,700 people and killed almost 150 in the United States.

The president on Wednesday announced that he was invoking the Defense Production Act, giving the White House the authority to increase production of masks, ventilators, and respirators, as well as expand hospital capacity to combat the pandemic.

President Trump also signed the second CCP Virus relief bill into law that provides paid sick leave, unemployment help, and free testing to Americans. He also temporarily closed the Canada-U.S. border to nonessential traffic and confirmed reports that the southern border will be closed to asylum-seekers and anyone who attempts to enter the United States illegally.

The Trump administration also plans to deploy a Navy hospital ship to New York City and another one to the West Coast while pushing its plan to send relief checks to millions of Americans.

The president thanked American physicians, nurses, and truckers who are at the front lines against the CCP Virus, praising them as “true American HEROES.” He urged all Americans to unify in a “war with an invisible enemy.”

“But that enemy is no match for the spirit and resolve of the American people,” President Trump said. “It cannot overcome the dedication of our doctors, nurses, and scientists—and it cannot beat the LOVE, PATRIOTISM, and DETERMINATION of our citizens. Strong and United, WE WILL PREVAIL!”
