Gun violence in Chicago, Illinois, has caused a high number of children aged 17 and under to be shot this year, police reported.

In 2021, a total of 261 children have already been injured by gunshots, of which 41 were killed, Fox News reported Sept. 10. This number is higher than the total number—214—of children aged 17 and under that have died from COVID so far in 2021, demonstrating just how tragic these shootings are.

Danger has increased significantly in Chicago, as evidenced by the fact that 61 people were shot and killed last weekend alone, 6 of whom died.

The mother of one of the children who died on Sept. 3, Angela Gregg, said she did not know the reasons but said her son “should not have lost his life at 4 years old, and someone needs to step up and say something.”

The highest level of violence was recorded the week of July 4, when the number of people shot reached 100. At that time, the Democratic mayor, Lori Lightfoot, asked for help from the president, Joe Biden, who presented some proposals related to the use of weapons.

It should be recalled that Lightfoot cut the police budget following last year’s violent protests by the Marxist group’s Black Lives Matter and Antifa over the death of George Floyd.

During last year’s move to reform the police department, Lightfoot cut $58 million from the budget by 2021 and slashed nearly 600 positions.

Last month, however, she announced that police funding would increase for the next fiscal year.

“It’s my expectation that the police department budget will increase, no question. We have to,” Lightfoot confirmed at a press conference, according to NBC5 Chicago.

Her announcement came days after two city police officers were gunned down during a traffic stop on Aug. 7, leaving 29-year-old policewoman Ella French dead and her male partner fighting for his life.

Amid a historic wave of violence in Chicago, the city is suffering an unprecedented exodus of police officers, considerably reducing the number of officers available to meet the growing demand for insecurity. According to police reports, there are at least ten gang members for every police officer in the city.

Fox News reports that the number of Chicago city police officers retiring so far in 2021 already surpassed all retirements in 2018 and is on track to be the highest number in the department’s history.

In February, a University of Illinois study points to Chicago as the most corrupt city in the United States, far surpassing Los Angeles, in second place with almost twice as many inhabitants, and even New York, in third place with three times as many inhabitants.

The research takes as reference data from the justice department between 1976 and 2019. In Chicago, nearly 1,800 corruption convictions were handed down during this time, according to local media WGN TV on February 25.

Likewise, federal statistics show significant increases in murder rates nationwide but concentrated in cities like Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington, DC.

These cities are governed by Democrats who pursue strong leftist policies that promote police defunding, criminals’ early release, and drug use legalization.
