The number of gunshot injuries jumped in much of the nation after the Democratic Party supported anti-police protests, the Oval Office said.
President Donald Trump has criticized elected Democrats in New York, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Illinois, and other states for sympathizing with extreme “anarchist” protests that swept across the nation after Minnesotan George Floyd died in custody on May 25.
“For decades politicians running many of our cities have put the interests of criminals above the rights of law-abiding citizens,” he said in a press conference video shared on Facebook. “The same politicians have now embraced the far-left movement to break up our police departments, causing violent crime in their cities to spiral, and I mean spiral seriously, out of control.”
He reported more than 300 Americans were shot in New York City in July, representing a 277 percent increase on the same month last year. The number of murders soared 94 percent in Minneapolis and 27 percent in Philadelphia compared to the previous corresponding period in 2019.
However, Illinois arguably had the worst crime wave so far this year.
“Perhaps no citizens have suffered more from the menace of violent crime than the wonderful people of Chicago, the city I know very well,” he said. “At least 414 people have been murdered in the city this year, a roughly 50 percent increase over the last year, [and] more than 1,900 people have been shot. These are numbers that are not even to be believed.”
The president believes part of the problem is Democratic Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot not taking responsibility for law enforcement. She is refusing to work with the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), and other federal agencies.
“The effort to shut down police in their communities has led to a shocking explosion of shootings, killing, violence, and murders,” he said. “When they [city leaders] abdicate their duty the results are catastrophic … there is simply no substitute for a police department that has the strong backing of city leaders.”
The U.S. Department of Justice is mobilizing the FBI, DEA, ATF, U.S. Marshall Service, and the Department of Homeland Security to send hundreds of “skilled law enforcement officers” to Chicago to work with local police to restore law and order.
“Murderers and violent criminals are breaking a wide range of federal laws,” the president said. “We will find them, arrest them, and prosecute them. They will be in jail for many years to come.”
