According to Sound of Hope, on June 20, several counties in Shangrao City, Jiangxi province, were hit by heavy rain, and the rivers swelled. However, authorities suddenly released floods from two upstream reservoirs without warning, causing flooding downstream.
Residents said that floodwaters from two reservoirs, Qiyi and Xiakou, caused some towns and villages to be completely flooded. As a result, many areas suffered power outages, water outages, and internet disconnections.
The residents added that property losses were heavy because they did not have time to prepare to evacuate and move.
The residents angrily denounced the authorities for not taking the safety of the people seriously and ignoring their lives.
Twitter account @COURAGESTARnew said, “On June 20, there was heavy rain in Yushan, Shangrao, Jiangxi, and Yushan No. 1 Middle School has flooded again. The flood was released upstream of the heavy rain. Today, the entire Xiatang Township of Yushan County suffered.”
Twitter account @TragedyInChina wrote, “The Yushan Qiyi Reservoir in Shangrao, Jiangxi, released the flood at 7:00 on June 20, and the entire city downstream was flooded. This is a man-made disaster!”
One netizen commented, “My family is now trapped on the third floor of the house, the third floor is not covered, and it is raining outside. As far as I know, there is no advance notice about the flood discharge, and it suddenly leaked, and many people were caught off guard, including the elderly and the child is at home alone. This flood is a natural disaster and a man-made disaster! Because the government did not notify in advance.”
Another netizen shared, “The flood discharge town government did not notify people to transfer them. Now many people’s homes are flooded, and many material appliances have been damaged by water. Many people who stay in the village are elderly people who are inconvenient to move.”
