Sina reported that China’s anti-corruption agency released an announcement on December 1 on six corruption cases.

One of them was the former deputy secretary of the Party committee and the president of Guangxi University of Science and Technology, Li Simin. He was arrested in June.

According to the notice, Li accepted tokens that included banquets at high-end hotels, travel, and golf engagements that affected the impartial execution of his official duties.

Between 2017 and 2022, Li repeatedly accepted “gifts” from private business owners.

Li and his family accepted travel arrangements to different places, including Xiamen and Yunnan, provided by business owners.

Besides, he received gifts in violation of the law and used public vehicles for private use. He used the official car of the Guangxi University of Science and Technology for personal purposes several times.

Due to his serious disciplinary and legal problems, in July, Li was expelled from the Party and dismissed from public office. His suspected criminal issues were transferred to the anti-graft body for examination and prosecution.

On November 2, the court in Laibin city held a public hearing on Li’s bribery case. The court showed that Li had taken advantage of his position to provide assistance to relevant companies and private entrepreneurs in matters such as project contracting, equipment procurement, and project payment allocation. The total amount he received in these deals reached nearly 16 million yuan ($2.3 million).

Li pleaded guilty and sincerely repented. Sentencing will occur at a later date.

Sohu also reported this case which attracted some comments from netizens.

One netizen asked, “Is that strange?”

Another tried to answer, “It’s strange to catch someone.”A different netizen commented, “Don’t ask how many officials are corrupt; ask how many are not corrupt.”
